Say Hello to Bozo!

Is there anyone who has never had a rough day at work? Or maybe a rough day at home and it is still in your mind at work? I personally don’t know of anyone who could stand up and say “Me! I ALWAYS have a smooth day at work, and my home life is like living in paradise!”

I know for myself, I try hard not to let things ruffle me; if I am going to react emotionally to something in the workplace, it has to be something that really got under my skin and wouldn’t crawl out. In short, I try to remember the only thing I can change is me – and when I am upset it is usually the “me” that needs to change.

A while ago, the colleagues I worked with in Family Services chipped in to buy an “Original Bozo the Clown 3-D Bop Bag” for “us.” But the real reason the idea arose was because I had been going through a stressful time, and my colleagues (rightly so!) decided I needed something to punch. Enter Bozo the Clown Bop Bag!

As it turned out, Bozo the Clown Bop Bag was a hit (literally and figuratively) with not only my group of colleagues, but the larger department as well. Staff would make their way over to Bozo the Clown Bop Bag and give it one – or several bops – when needed. Bozo the Clown Bop Bag also had a way of touring the department and ending up in others’ workspaces – just to give them a laugh – or for them to keep for a while and bop whenever they desired.

We also discovered that the Bozo the Clown Bop Bag could be used for calming without any bopping. Bozo could be hugged; you could also rest your head on Bozo and relax. This Bozo the Clown Bop Bag (“Bozo the First”) currently resides in the Family Service Center, which is in the former Saint Rose school – directly behind the SaintA Capitol Drive location. Bozo the First is available for staff and clients – children or parents – for use.

Recently, another “Original Bozo the Clown 3-D Bop Bag” appeared at the Capitol Drive location. This one (“Bozo the Second”) appeared when it became apparent that some regulatory items were needed around my work space. Bozo the Second is currently residing on the second floor of the West Wing – and will likely make his way down to the first floor to say hello. Bozo the Second is available for all staff and clients to bop, to hug, to squeeze his nose (it beeps), to hug or just laugh at.

Any employees reading this blog should know that if you see Bozo the Second in the hallway, feel free to get to know him. If you see him in an office, bring him out into the hallway for the boys in our Residential Treatment program or Transitions Therapeutic School to use. Bozo the Second is also on loan to visit your personal work space for a day or two.

Is there something (like Bozo the Clown) that you can think of that could appear in your work area? Is there something that would provide you and co-workers with a chance to do a little de-stressing? Or something that would, at the very least, give you a laugh or a smile? Is there something that you can do personally to help this to happen?

I know there are many Bozos out there waiting to get a good workout. There must be room for Bozo the Third to make an appearance somewhere in our agency!
